What is a compression shirt for?
A compression shirt holds your torso and upper arms with steady pressure, so the muscles you train stay supported through the session and in the hours after it. That is the point of wearing it tight: a loose tee drapes, a compression shirt grips. Wear it on the days your chest, back and shoulders do the work, then keep it on while you cool down. The compression wear guide sets out what research has measured on training and recovery in compression.
Why choose half sleeves?
Half sleeves keep the pressure on your shoulders and upper arms and leave your forearms and elbows bare. Bare forearms run cooler on a hot afternoon, and they keep your grip and elbow bend free of fabric when you hold a bar, a bat or a racket. If you want your arms covered to the wrist instead, the full sleeve compression t-shirt is cut from the same polyester blend.
Polyester or nylon for your compression t-shirt?
This one is polyester, the pick for outdoor training and frequent washing. If you prefer nylon, the nylon compression vest is the half sleeve in nylon. The compression wear guide sets the two fibres side by side, with what each does well and where each needs care.
How should a compression t-shirt fit?
Like a second layer of skin: no gap at the neck, nothing pulling tight across your shoulders, and no loose fabric anywhere. Raise both arms overhead: the shirt should stay tucked to your waistline rather than riding up your back. The sleeves should grip your upper arm without leaving a red ring. To pick a size, measure your chest full circumference and match it on the men's size chart, which gives compression chest sizes as full circumference.
How do men wear a compression t-shirt?
-
Upper-body gym days: on its own as the training top, so you can check your bar path and posture in the mirror.
-
Net practice: under your cricket shirt, close to the body through batting and bowling spells.
-
Runs and rides: alone on warm mornings, or under a loose tee when you want a second layer.
-
Badminton and football: as the close layer under your playing shirt or jersey.
Do you wear an undershirt under a compression t-shirt?
No: the compression t-shirt is the layer that goes next to your skin. An undershirt underneath puts loose cotton between the fabric and your muscles, so the shirt can no longer hold them, and it traps sweat against your back. Wear it on bare skin, and put any outer layer on top.
How many compression t-shirts do you need?
Two, if you train most days. A compression shirt does its job fresh from the wash, so with two you can wear one while the other dries, instead of pulling a damp shirt back on for the next session.
What goes with it?
For a full set, add the men's compression shorts for leg days, or the compression tights when you want your legs covered too.
